Life Is Good

Did anybody get the license number of the truck that hit me? Because I think he went around the block and came back and did it again! It’s not enough that my back has been hurting for quite a while now, but Saturday evening my throat started feeling scratchy and by bedtime a cold was beginning to knock me on my butt. I took Zicam and PM pain relievers and went to bed, and spent Sunday moping around feeling sorry for myself. Hopefully today will be a better day.

Along with feeling crappy, yesterday was another cold, wet one here in Newport, Oregon. It started raining sometime during the night and kept up all day long. Yes, I know, I sound like a sniveling wimp. Right now I feel like one, too.

The good news is that our friends John and Kathy Huggins from Living the RV Dream just wrapped up their first rally in Bradenton, Florida, and by all reports it was a huge success. They had a nice turnout, everybody had a great time, and they raised $1,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project. We’re sorry we couldn’t be there for all the fun, but John tells me they’re going to do it again next year and we’re going to try very hard to fit it into our calendar.

Several people have asked us if we will be at the Escapees RV Club’s Escapade Rally in Essex Junction, Vermont next July. Yes, we plan to be there, and I will be doing a full line of seminars, like I have at the last three Escapades. It’s been a while since we’ve been to New England and we’re looking forward to it. If you haven’t registered yet, why not? It’s going to be a lot of fun. I hope we see you there.

On the subject of rallies, folks keep asking us when we are going to have another Gypsy Journal rally. Miss Terry has assured me that anytime I want to do that, she would be more than happy to show my new wife all the things she needs to do to accomplish it. While we love doing the rallies, they were just too much work and the rising cost of insurance and other expenses made it impossible to continue. We miss getting together with all of our RVing friends and I miss the opportunity to get up on stage and play the fool as the emcee, as well as doing all my seminars, but it just doesn’t work for us at this stage in our lives.

And I have to admit that not having all the commitments that we once did when we were working the rally circuit as vendors, teaching at Life on Wheels, and running our own rallies has really given us a wonderful sense of freedom that we lost somewhere along the way from when we first started traveling fulltime. I can remember when we would pull up to an intersection and ask ourselves, “right or left?” because we didn’t have to be anyplace and the whole country was our playground. That’s what fulltiming should be about, but along the way making a living interfered with that freedom for a long time. It’s nice to be at the point now where we can make rally and speaking commitments that we want to and say no thanks to others that are not convenient to us. Life is good.

Congratulations Steve Quade, winner of our drawing for an audiobook of Chesapeake 1880 by my friend Ken Rossignol, a tale of life in the Chesapeake Bay region as the industrial revolution changed the world forever. We had 96 entries this time around. Stay tuned, a new contest starts soon.

Thought For The Day – Your moves might not be the best, but making a fool of yourself on the dance floor is more fun than sitting on the bench alone.
